8th Grade PC

THIS COURSE (BELOW) IS BY INVITATION ONLY AND MEETS EVERYDAY IN THE 1st SEMESTER

PROJECT CHALLENGE 8 – This program is designed for students who are identified by the district as gifted and talented. Remember, 8th grade PC meets every day during the 1st semester. Each session is designed to challenge your child to think creatively while collaborating with their peers.

The Future City Competition is the featured challenge in 8th grade. This hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math) competition was designed to introduce middle school students to the field of engineering. With the help of an engineer mentor, students will learn about a specific problem that cities will face in the future and write a 1500 word research paper. Next, they must successfully manage a virtual city using the SimCity: Cities of the Future software and create a Google Slides presentation that exhibits growth. Simultaneously, students will learn the importance of the Project Management Cycle when having to meet important deadlines and the Engineering Design Process while researching solutions for the identified problem. Next, students must decide on a geographic location and write a 500 word narrative describing what their city will look like 100 years into the future. After that is completed, students begin to build a 50” x 25” x 20” 3-D model that represents a portion of their future city. Finally, 3 individuals will be selected to present this project at the annual competition which traditionally takes place in January.
