The Advanced Reading Program is designed for students who have shown an ability to work well above grade level in Literacy.

7th/8th Grade Advanced Reading Rubric 2025-26

Students must earn at least 7 points based on the following criteria (Note: Students must maintain an A or B average at the end of the year to remain in Advanced Reading):

    • 1 point:  90-95%
    • 2 points:  96-100%
    • 1 point:  Meeting Expectations
    • 2 points:  Exceeding Expectations
    • 1 point:  Meeting Expectations
    • 2 points:  Exceeding Expectations
    • 1 point:  Command of 7 of the below behaviors
    • 2 points:  Command of at least 8 of the below behaviors


    Student must demonstrate command of a majority of the following behaviors based on the body of work from the school year, which will be assessed by the Literacy/Reading teacher from the previous school year.

    1. Student demonstrates a passion for reading and navigates new, challenging, and complex texts with high levels of stamina, fluency, and comprehension.
    2. Student approaches texts with a genuine interest in learning and expanding his/her knowledge by asking questions and/or seeking clarification when needed.
    3. Student analyzes the author’s purpose/techniques and frequently makes connections between different texts, authors, and disciplines.
    4. Student evaluates the author’s arguments and identifies potential biases.
    5. Student adapts his/her reading speed and style depending on the material and purpose.
    6. Student recognizes recurring themes and ideas, enriching his/her understanding of the world.
    7. Student skims for specific information, scans for main ideas, takes notes, and reads closely for deep understanding.
    8. Student shares insights, is open to diverse perspectives, and is willing to challenge his/her assumptions by engaging in meaningful and productive discussions with others.
    9. Student should develop the ability to critically analyze the context in which advanced vocabulary is presented by decoding the surrounding words, sentences, and paragraphs to derive meaning and aid in predictions.
    10. Student effectively extracts implicit insights from the text and interprets its language, recognizing techinical, connotative and figurative meanings, while also analyzing how word choices influence the text’s meaning and tone.
