Our February focus at CMS is Perseverance—the ability to keep going even when things feel challenging. As winter continues and the school year moves forward, this is a perfect time to remind our Pirates that effort, determination, and a positive mindset can help them overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
Perseverance in Action
For Students:
Perseverance means not giving up when something feels hard. At CMS, students can demonstrate perseverance by:
- Trying their best, even when work is challenging or mistakes happen.
- Asking for help and using feedback to improve.
- Staying focused and committed to goals in the classroom, clubs, and activities.
- Encouraging themselves and others to keep going.
For Parents:
Families can help nurture perseverance by:
- Encouraging children to keep trying and reminding them that mistakes are part of learning.
- Praising effort, progress, and determination rather than just outcomes.
- Helping children set small, achievable goals and celebrate growth.
- Modeling perseverance by showing resilience when facing challenges at home.
Together, we can support our Pirates as they learn that perseverance builds confidence, resilience, and success—both in school and beyond.

Dear CMS Families,
Spring sports physicals for the 2025-2026 school year will take place after school at CMS on Wednesday March 4th at 2:35 PM. Physicals will be conducted by our school physician, Dr. Wiseman, and are free of charge to students. Students may take the late bus at 3:35 PM or arrange for parent pick-up. To secure an appointment, students must submit a hard copy of the completed sports physical packet to the school nurse (Mrs. Black) or the Main Office by Friday, February 27th. Students cannot turn in the paperwork the morning of physicals as it needs to be reviewed.
The sports physical forms can be found here on the athletics website for those students using our school physician. Students may pick up paper copies in the Main Office or Nurse’s Office. The History Form (Pages 1 and 2) must be completed and signed by both a parent/guardian and student. The Athletes With Disabilities Form must be completed, if applicable. Please include the student's name, date of birth, and current grade on all pages. Dr. Wiseman will complete the Physical Examination Form and Medical Eligibility Form. Please submit the entire packet if your child is planning on seeing our school physician.
Note: The Health History must be fully completed or the physician will not be able to conduct the physical. Any student who wants to try out for a fall sport must have a valid sports physical within the past 365 days.

CMS Athletics is partnering with the Language Arts Department to host a school-wide book drive benefiting Book Smiles. BookSmiles gives new life to gently used books by distributing them to children and educators, helping to promote childhood literacy, inspire a love of reading, and strengthen communities. Through this initiative, we aim to support BookSmiles’ mission of ensuring every child has access to books—fostering imagination, empowering readers, and transforming communities through literacy.
Collection bins will be located outside the Main Office and in the Gym Lobby.

Regular attendance is essential for student success. Every day your child is at school is an opportunity to learn, grow, and build relationships with peers and teachers. Missing school can make it harder to keep up with lessons, complete assignments, and fully participate in classroom activities. If you need additional support or resources to help improve your child’s attendance, please reach out to one of our guidance counselors — we’re here to help every step of the way!

We’re seeing flu activity on the rise in our community, and it’s not too late to protect your child by getting a flu shot! The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that flu vaccination prevents millions of illnesses and thousands of hospitalizations every year — including reducing serious flu outcomes for children such as hospital visits and intensive care stays.†
Here’s why vaccination and healthy habits matter:
-
Flu shots work! Studies show that vaccinated children are significantly less likely to need urgent medical care or be hospitalized from the flu.†
- Healthy habits help stop the spread:
- ✅ Wash hands often with soap and water
- ✅ Avoid sharing water bottles or personal items
- ✅ Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow
- ✅ Stay home when sick to protect others
Flu affects everyone — even healthy kids can get very sick and spread it to family and friends. Getting vaccinated and practicing these simple habits helps keep our school community healthy and learning all season long!

From helping ensure safety to building positive relationships and supporting school events, his dedication never goes unnoticed. We are grateful for the care, professionalism, and kindness he brings to our school each day.
Thank you, Officer Gunning, for helping keep our school safe, supported, and connected!
